The Ruger AR-556 semi-automatic, M4-style, direct impingement Modern Sporting Rifle offers consumers an affordable, American-made Modern Sporting Rifle with the rugged reliability they have come to expect from Ruger. Extensively tested during its development, the AR-556 is constructed from top-quality components, including forged 7075-T6 aluminum upper and lower receivers and a cold hammer-forged chrome-moly steel barrel with M4 feed ramp cuts. Chambered in 5.56 NATO, the AR-556’s carbine-length, flat-top, M4 design is fully configured with a Ruger Rapid Deploy folding rear sight, milled F-height gas block with post front sight, forward assist, dust cover, brass deflector, telescoping six-position stock, improved trigger-reach grip, enlarged trigger guard and one 30-round Magpul PMag. Standardized M4/AR components are utilized throughout, so the AR-556 can be customized easily.

The milled gas block is located at a carbine length (M4) position for improved balance and handling. Multiple attachment points include a QD socket and bayonet lug, for many sling and accessory mounting options. Serrations on the angled face of the gas block provide a low glare surface.
The handguards are made from heat-resistant glass-filled nylon for shooting comfort and durability.
The front sight post is elevation adjustable, and a front sight tool is included. The A-2 Style F-Height allows co-witness with many optics. The Ruger® Rapid Deploy folding rear sight provides windage adjustability and is a solid, reliable aiming system when coupled with the elevation adjustable front sight. The rear sight can be folded out of the way to make room for optics but can be instantly redeployed if needed.
The six-position telescoping M4-style buttstock and Mil-Spec buffer tube allow the rifle to be properly sized for different shooters, or varying levels of outerwear or defensive gear.
The 16.1 inch medium contour barrel is cold hammer-forged providing ultra-precise rifling for exceptional accuracy, longevity and easy cleaning. The 1:8 twist rate stabilizes bullets from 35 to 77 grains and the 5.56 NATO chamber allows the use of both 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem. ammunition. M4 feed ramps provide improved operational reliability and the matte black oxide finish reduces glare and provides corrosion resistance. A Ruger flash suppressor is provided and the ½"-28 threaded barrel allows for standard muzzle accessories to be installed.
The ergonomic pistol grip features an extended trigger reach for more precise trigger control. The enlarged trigger guard is designed to allow for gloved shooting.
The chrome-plated bolt carrier inside diameter and chrome-plated gas key inside diameter provide exceptional resistance to hot gases. The gas key is staked so that it will not loosen after extensive firing. A matte black oxide finish on the exterior of the bolt carrier provides corrosion resistance.

I purchased a CA compliant version of the Ruger AR-556 (model 8500) in black from Rifle Gear in early June. I cannot express how satisfied I am with this rifle and with Riflegear. Riflegear had a good price and had already modified it to be CA compliant with a bullet button. They shipped it with a 30 rd. PMAG blocked to 10 Rds. I would have preferred a 10 rd. PMAG M3 or even a blocked 20 rd. but the blocked 30 rd. mag still works ok with one problem (see later on). There was no charge for shipping and the rifle arrived quickly to my FFL. All communications with Riflegear before and during the purchase were fast, complete, accurate and professional. As to the rifle, it has very nice features ranging from the 1:8 rifling, the very nice design of the Delta Ring which makes removing and changing the handguard easy, to very tight tolerances. I have fired it at three range sessions so far at distances of 50 and 100 yards for a total of about 350 rounds. It has functioned almost flawlessly with a variety of ammunition including: steel case TulAmmo 55 gr. .223, PMC Bronze .223 55gr. FMJBT, Federal 62gr. XM855, Federal 55gr. XM193, Hornady TAP, 75gr. .223 hollow point, Hornady Urban TAP 60gr., and General Dynamics 62gr. XM855. The only problems were with TulAmmo and this was when the rifle was new out of the box. The first mag inserted in the weapon - a 10 rd. PMAG M3 loaded with 10 rds of TulAmmo, jammed when the bolt was closed. The tip of the top round hit the side of the chamber and didn't feed. A second rd. tried to feed under it. I had to drop the mag to clear the jam. This happened again when I inserted another 10 rd. PMAG 3. I then loaded only 9 rounds. This fed properly. After those first two malfunctions the AR-556 has functioned flawlessly with all ammo and all mags including the blocked 30 rd. Pmag M2, seven 10 rd. PMAG M3's and two 10 rd. AR-Stoner steel mags. One problem with the 30 rd. PMAG blocked to 10 rds, the mag will not lock in place with the bolt closed. It will with the bolt open or with bolt closed if there are only 9 rds. in the mag. Accuracy has been very good. I have been getting groups as small as 1 MOA with most ammo. Most are in the 1-2 MOA range. The TulAmmo occasionally gives a 1 MOA group but most of those are 2+ MOA. I have changed the handguard for a Magpul MOE SL M-LOK handguard and installed a Streamlight TLR-1 HL with long gun kit and remote switch, an EOTech EXPS2-2 HWS and an EOTech G33 Magnifier. The Ruger sights are a 1/3 co-witness with the EOTech EXPS2-2 HWS. The Ruger sights work well. Even with my bad eyes I was getting good groups with the iron sights today at 100 yds. This rifle handles and shoots really well. I can't say enough good things about it. Rifle Gear is a great place to do business with. It's a great combination.
