The Daniel Defense RIS II was developed at the request of USSOCOM for the SOPMOD II program. This specific requirement resulted in a free floating M203 mounting solution without the need for specific tools. Additionally the RIS II allows for attachments of lasers, vertical grips or lights via the 1913 rails while being used in conjunction with a low profile gas block. The RIS II has been fielded by USSOCOM on their M4A1 rifle.
